UPMC Cuts 1,000 Jobs Due to Post-Pandemic Challenges


UPMC, the largest employer in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, is laying off about 1,000 employees. The cuts are a response to challenges in the post-pandemic healthcare market. Most of the affected positions are non-clinical and administrative roles.

The layoffs represent around 1% of UPMC’s workforce, which totals 100,000 employees. UPMC clarified that these reductions are happening through attrition, closing of open positions, and eliminating redundancies. The company aims to realign the organization without compromising its commitment to patient care, research, and community investment.

Paul Wood, a spokesperson for UPMC, stated that affected employees will receive enhanced severance pay and benefits coverage. This support is intended to ease the transition for those who are losing their jobs.

To ensure that UPMC continues to thrive as a leading, successful health care organization, limited reductions are occurring throughout the health system primarily among non-clinical, non-member-facing, administrative staff through attrition, closing of open positions, elimination of redundancies and other actions. This realignment will not alter UPMC’s investments in our communities, facilities, commitment to clinical care and research, strategic growth, or to offering those throughout our workforce industry-leading benefits. “

Despite the layoffs, UPMC remains dedicated to providing exceptional care and maintaining its investments in communities and facilities.

Most of the affected positions are non-member-facing roles. UPMC is also closing open positions and eliminating redundancies as part of its restructuring efforts.

To support employees affected by these layoffs, UPMC is offering enhanced severance pay and benefits. This is aimed at providing some financial security during this transitional period.
