So far no motive has been given for the attack, which took place shortly after 11.30am local time.

The suspect was detained later in the day by one uniformed police officer and four undercover officers, according to Guizhou Radio and TV Station’s official Weibo account.

The report said the man was carrying a bottle of water and some bread when he was wrestled to the ground by the officers.

Local police later said the man they detained was a 40-year-old identified only by the surname Li.

So far little is known about the victims, but police said they were being treated in hospital. State news agency Xinhua said the “relevant information is being verified”.

Zhenxiong, situated in Yunnan’s northeast, borders Guizhou and Sichuan provinces and until 2020 was classified as being “poverty stricken”.

In January, the county was hit by an avalanche that killed 44 people.
