FIE Foil World Cup: Hong Kong reach quarter-finals in style with comfortable victory over Hungary

A new-look Hong Kong team was barely tested by their Hungarian counterparts at the FIE Foil World Cup on Saturday morning as the host’s fencers advanced in style to reach the quarter-finals.

Led by Olympic champion Cheung Ka-long, the new team, which also included Ryan Choi Chun-yin, Aaron Lee Yat-long and Leung Chin-yue, received a bye to start in the round of 16 at the AsiaWorld-Expo.

Ranked five spots above their opponents in sixth place, Hong Kong wasted no time as world No 7 Cheung took the opening shift to establish a 5-2 lead for his team. Leung then took over and by the time Choi blanked his opponent in the third round, the hosts were up 15-5.

Having already dispatched Macau 45-19 in an encounter earlier in the morning, Hungary were far from posing any threat as Hong Kong doubled their lead, to 30-10, after a second shift from each of Leung, Cheung and Choi, effectively putting the tie beyond any doubt.

Hong Kong, who missed out on the Paris Olympic Games after finishing seventh in the previous edition in Tokyo in 2021, went on to seal a commanding 45-18 win as the trio of the city’s fencers each won their three bouts with ease.
