As you can tell from the title, now, would be a great time for you to log into the Epic Games Store (EGS) to redeem your free copy of Obsidian Entertainment’s much-beloved post-apocalyptic RPG, Fallout: New Vegas (F:NV). You have until June 1 to redeem the game before it gets swapped out for another.
The Ultimate Edition essentially means you get the base game plus all the extra content that was released for the game. This includes four expansions, Dead Money, Honest Hearts, Old World Blues and Lonesome Road and two content packs, Gunrunner’s Arsenal and Courier’s Stash.
Like so many fans of the franchise, F:NV has to be my personal favourite when it comes to modern Fallout games. If I were to rank all the games, it would sit right below Fallout 2.
I have spent over 160 hours in New Vegas and occasionally I have to fight the urge to reinstall the game as it would throw a major spanner in my productivity and not to mention stop me from clearing my backlog of games.
Compared to Fallout 3 and Fallout 4, I generally prefer F:NV due to the fact that it has closer ties to the first and second games. Also, with Obsidian Entertainment’s expertise and repertoire when it comes to creating engaging and immersive RPGs, F:NV is no different and is filled with interesting characters, locations and quests.
However, this is a 13-year-old game and it not only does not look the best but it also still has some bugs and janky mechanics left over that were not fixed by the developers. With that said, you can always rely on the dedicated modding community to fix these bugs, and add more modern features and even new content.
Even after 13 years, the modding scene for F:NV is still going strong and the game’s Nexus Mods page has over 20,000 mods. If you are not experienced with modding or just want an easy-to-follow guide, I highly recommend the “Viva New Vegas” guide that focuses on improving the game’s stability, performance, gameplay and customisability.
Unfortunately, after digging around a little bit, I have learned that the EGS’ version of F:NV might not be the easiest to mod due to a couple of reasons such as a missing expansion (which is actually listed on the game’s page) and a tweaked .EXE file that is incompatible with some of the necessary mods.
So if you do want to mod the game, you will need to do a bit of research and as always, remember to backup your files first.
With all that said though, I would still highly recommend Fallout: New Vegas even in its most vanilla form as the game is just a lot of fun especially if you love open-world games where you are pretty much free to go wherever you like, do whatever you please and be as righteous or despicable as you want.
