Event: ‘Migrant Women Rise’ documentary screening and mutual aid fundraiser

[Sponsored] Hong Kong community-based record shop and party Bad Times Disco (BTD) will host a mutual aid fundraiser and screening of the documentary “Migrant Women Rise: Stories of Red-Tagged Overseas Filipino Workers” from director Carl Catedral at Eaton HK on December 16.

Part of worldwide celebrations to mark International Migrants Day on December 18, all proceeds from the event will go to the Hong Kong chapter of GABRIELA, a progressive alliance of more than 200 women’s organisations.

Migrant Women Rise” follows two Filipino domestic workers in Hong Kong who fall victim to “red-tagging” under the Duterte administration as they organise against repressive Philippine government policies.

Red-tagging is a pernicious practice of targeting and harassing those critical of the government that has undermined democratic processes. According to the United Nations, it has “posed a serious threat to civil society and freedom of expression.”

The film also highlights the challenges faced by migrant domestic workers in the city – including rigid immigration controls and policies that activists say contribute to exploitation – and a rich history of labour and human rights advocacy.

Followed by a discussion with Filipino-American filmmaker Catedral and migrant worker leaders, the evening will end with an after party featuring BTD DJs.

BTD’s fourth mutual aid fundraiser will build on past events that have raised more than HK$115,000. All donation transfer receipts will be shared via Instagram, email and a public document for full transparency.
