Fundraising set up by three students for senior citizen's retirement in US raises more than RM1 million

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 28 — A senior citizen, forced out of retirement due to a hike in rent, can finally retire after three students helped to raise funds for him.

The 80-year-old, who only wanted to be known as Mr James, was working as a janitor at Callisburg High School in Cooke County, Texas.

He was forced to return to work in January this year as his rent increased during the pandemic.

Seeing him returning to work, three students of the school decided to set up a Go Fund Me page to help him where they managed to raise US$270,905 (RM1.22 million).

Calling the campaign Getting Mr James Out of This School, Fox13news reported that the money was raised in nine days although their initial target was US$10,000 (RM44,880).

One of the students, Greyson Thurman reportedly said that they decided to start the campaign as nobody deserves to work their whole life.

“They deserve to enjoy everything,” he said.
